Fever Screening FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
If you have a question about fever screening we hope you can find the answer here. If not, please drop us a line and we’ll do our best to help.
Does fever screening detect people with a virus?
No. Fever screening simply detects those people with abnormal temperatures. Those people can then be taken through secondary screening for further clinical evaluation. It is possible that asymptomatic people, and those taking medication to reduce fever will not trigger the threshold alarm (as they do not have an elevated temperature).
Can I use an industrial camera to fever screen?
Accurate and effective fever screening, normally requiring medical grade thermal imaging equipment and protocols, can be achieved during an emergency with industrial equipment/software that meet minimum specifications, and can be adapted for fever screening, but it is simpler to use specialist equipment built for the purpose.
The primary requirement is a camera that operates in the narrow range unique to the infrared emitted from the human body. Sufficient definition, thermal sensitivity, thermal accuracy, frame rate, optics, stability and software are all considerations.
Cameras that require extensive adaptation may not be suitable for fast, efficient deployment during this emergency.
The potential dangers associated with ineffective screening or operation could result in high percentages of false negatives and a false sense of security, leading to breakdown of containment and continued spread of a virus.
When comparing systems it is important to understand the following:
- Is the camera system already fit for purpose?
- Can the camera be adapted for purpose?
- What will deliver reliable results?

Is it possible to screen hundreds of people at the same time?
Yes, Meditherm systems are designed to screen moving crowds, so many individuals can be screened, however they must pass through a narrow choke point in order to screen effectively. The IRIS 520 UHD is the most suitable system for screening fast moving crowds at larger distances.
Can fever screening systems be used after the Covid-19 pandemic is over?
Yes, absolutely. Systems designed for medical screening typically hold their value if properly maintained and calibrated, so they could be offered for re-sale as a medical device. Alternatively, systems can be donated to local health care providers.
Good quality brand name industrial thermal cameras also hold their value and can be re-sold into the industrial market.
It is worth noting that the FDA HAVE LIFTED MEDICAL DEVICE REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS FOR FEVER SCREENING THERMAL SYSTEMS FOR THE DURATION OF THIS MEDICAL EMERGENCY. After the emergency, fever screening equipment will again need to be FDA registered and compliant.
How long does it take to set up a fever screening station?
A fever screening station can be deployed in five to fifteen minutes depending on how efficient the operative is. Systems are simple to set up and a list of protocols help ensure stations are setup correctly.
Is there any training for fever screening operatives?
Yes. Please contact our team to discuss your requirements and we will be happy to recommend a suitable training course.
How many people are needed to operate the system?
Our systems can be operated by one person. An additonal person/persons will be required for triaging individuals with abnormal temperatures for further clinical evaluation.
Is the software easy to use?
Yes, the interface is intuitive and easy to use with fast processing speeds. It is worth remembering that lower quality systems often process at slower speeds, so again, think about purpose. People need to be processed quickly to avoid creating bottlenecks and disgruntled lines.
I need a system in a short lead time, is this possible?
We usually carry stock of our systems and can ship within 1-2 working days so you can receive your fever screening system quickly. We will recommend training if it’s required and advise on operational protocols and support.
